Prettiest Bedroom In The World

A picturesque village near Merseyside was named as one of the prettiest villages in the country.

Loved by location scouts for its almost entirely grade II listed buildings, Great Budworth is reminiscent of a "gentler, more romantic yesteryear", according to The Times.

The Cheshire village's red-brick and timber houses provided the perfect setting for Harry Styles' wooing of Taylor Swift, once upon a time.

But the image of an archetypal Tudor village was deliberately crafted centuries later than you'd imagine, reported Cheshire Live.

Great Budworth, near Northwich, was the creation of Roland Egerton Warburton, Squire of nearby Arley Hall, upon whose estate the village sat.

Almost every crooked, grade II listed building in Warburton's fantasy village was built less than 150 years ago when the squire commissioned the rebuilding of the living, breathing village in a full size, Tudor style.

Its streets now cameo on television screens, standing in for 19th-century Hastings in the BBC's War of the Worlds, and hosting camels on its High Street in the public broadcaster's Our Zoo.

While the Victorian brick rear of the former Ring O' Bells pub - now a private residence with '1706' etched into a beam - betrays its archaic façade, the village is still home to buildings with a history from before the remodelling.

Popular poet William Shakespeare's own baptist, the Reverend John Bracegirdle, once oversaw the sandstone church of St Mary and All Saints', with its wondrous sandstone tower.

The landlord Warburton's own rhymes litter lintels along the narrow lanes.

One sits above the door of The George and Dragon Hotel, where Harry Styles, a native of nearby Holmes Chapel, once took Taylor Swift for a meal before the pair went for ice-cream at the Ice Cream Farm.

It reads: "As St. George in arm'd array did the fiery dragon slay, /So might thou, with might no less, slay the dragon drunkenness."

Great Budworth was joined on The Times list of thirty by Downham in Lancashire and Hawkshead in the Lakes as one of the three prettiest villages in the North West.
